SANTA ANA, Calif. — The man charged with murder in the drunken driving crash that killed a promising Los Angeles Angels pitcher and two others told investigators he must have "blanked out" while trying to find his way home and woke up only when the cars hit, according to a videotaped police interview played in court Thursday.

Andrew Thomas Gallo told investigators he and his stepbrother Raymond Rivera started the night of drinking at Johnny Carino's bar in Covina where his then-girlfriend was a waitress, City News Service reported.

Gallo, 23, is charged with three counts of second-degree murder for driving drunk and causing the April 2009 crash that killed pitcher Nick Adenhart, 22; Courtney Stewart, 20; and Henry Pearson, 25.

Gallo and Rivera left after about 90 minutes and made a quick trip to pick up an Xbox game console from a friend of Rivera's before going to The Well.

"I told him I have to go home," said Gallo, who was going to start a new job laying tile the next day, but the pair went to the bikini bar anyway.

"I told him we've got to stop" drinking, but before Gallo knew it someone had ordered them a round of shots, he said.

Gallo told the detectives he avoided shots of hard liquor, because he wasn't able to handle it. "The last time I did that at a family party things got out of hand and I blanked out," he said.

Gallo told investigators he couldn't remember how he and Rivera ended up in Fullerton and he was unfamiliar with the area.

BERLIN — A member of Germany's central bank who made disparaging remarks about Muslims and Jews in a disputed book has agreed to quit his position on the board, the Bundesbank said in a statement Thursday.

Thilo Sarrazin will be leaving his post at the end of the month after reaching an agreement with the bank, said Bundesbank President Axel Weber.

Sarrazin's comments in interviews surrounding the release of his book, "Germany Abolishes Itself," that Muslim immigrants in Europe are unwilling or incapable of integrating into western societies and that all Jews "share a certain gene" provoked a storm of controversy in Germany. Chancellor Angela Merkel and several members of her government had called for his dismissal.

"With a view to the public discussions, both sides agreed to end their work together at the end of the month," the Bundesbank said, adding that Sarrazin would ask the German president – responsible for naming the bank's board members – to relieve him of his duties.

A spokesman for President Christian Wulff told the DAPD news agency Thursday that Wulff welcomed the agreement with Sarrazin and would release him from his post.

The public outcry has not let up since the release last week of Sarrazin's book, which has nevertheless been a best-seller and the basis for a debate over how best to include the millions of immigrants who live in Germany.

In his book, Sarrazin argues the country's growing Muslim immigrant population is largely unwilling, or simply unable, to learn the German language or adapt to its norms.

WASHINGTON — It's hard to predict which pills will best lower which patient's high blood pressure, but researchers are hunting ways to better personalize therapy – perhaps even using a blood test.

The work is controversial, challenging today's usual approach to treating the hypertension that plagues nearly one in three U.S. adults.

Now a trio of studies shows some drug combinations work better for certain populations – and raises the possibility that measuring blood levels of a hormone involved in hypertension might help optimize some people's care.

The big surprise: Taking a drug that's a poor match to that hormone level may not just fail to work, it sometimes can trigger a jump in blood pressure.

"The idea that one size fits all doesn't make a lot of sense," says Dr. Michael Alderman of New York's Albert Einstein College of Medicine, who supports the blood test approach.

Don't expect a routine test for that hormone, called renin, any time soon. Many doctors are skeptical because initial research a few decades ago failed to show a clear benefit, says Dr. Ernesto Schiffrin of Canada's McGill University, a hypertension specialist with the American Heart Association.

"The reality is that trial and error is to some degree what has to be done because patients are different and some patients develop adverse effects with one agent and others don't," he says.

But with blood testing now easier and more reliable, some experts say it's time for broader studies to settle the debate.

"We must redirect our efforts away from the strategy of treating hypertension as one condition," wrote Wake Forest University public health specialist Dr. Curt Furberg. He pushed renin-guided therapy in an editorial accompanying the new research in this month's American Journal of Hypertension.
